Accept the challenge: Benchmark your LiDAR System
Are you curious about the performance of your own developed LiDAR system and want to compare it with other LiDAR systems, then join the LiDAR Olympics on 8 November!
Fraunhofer IMS and Jakajima have taken the initiative to organise the LiDAR Olympics.
LiDAR can be applied in many areas and industries (just some examples):
- Agrifood (smart farming, forestry, food quality)
- Astronomy (atmospheric physics)
- Automotive (autonomous driving, vehicle tracking)
- Civil engineering
- Climate change (meteorology)
- Geological and geographical mapping
- Seismology / Meteorology
We invite the above mentioned industries to participate in this challenge.
This event is not only meant to benchmark the participating systems in a competitive environment, but equally important is to meet the participating teams, discuss issues, exchange experience / knowledge in order stimulate further development of the Lidar technology and community. Learn playfully more about LiDAR performances and their challenges and exchange with others.
Enjoy this day of testing, learning and meeting the unexpected in order to make the LiDAR technology better!
There are 4 challenges and one challenge out of contest in form of testing stations which have to be mastered by the LiDAR cameras:

Each team can have max. 2 members
This 1st edition of the LiDAR Olympics has place for 8 teams max!
Participation is free for any type of LiDAR system team: from Research institutes / Universities to Commercial Organisations.
The jury will judge based upon the pure impression rating of visualized point cloud, including rough distance value check. Each jury member will give points (1 to 6) for good performances so that a final winner can be found.

You have to bring your own necessary equipment, hard- and software tools as well. We supply power and Internet (and drinks and food obviously).
LiDAR System specifications:
The following information is mandatory for participation in the competitions
- Compact camera system (< 20x20x20 cm³)
- Easy to integrate into a measurement setup with suitable holder for table tops
- Power supply: over own laptop or separate power supply unit
- Laser class 1
- Measurement range (indoor, 5% target,): > 3m
- Depth resolution: ≤ 25 cm
- Field of view: ≥ 30° horizontal, ≥ 10° vertical
- Angular resolution (horiz.& vert.): ≤ 1°
- Wavelength: 840 nm – 1000 nm, other wavelengths on request
- Frame rate: ≥ 5 fps
- Laptop/Monitor with display of point cloud
- Point cloud as heat-map or single points in direction of view of the camera
- Distance value for each point quickly displayable

The LiDAR Olympics takes place at the Automotive Campus in Helmond, The Netherlands, is the national and international hotspot, meeting place and a potential business location for automotive business. The Automotive Campus offers an attractive environment for learning- and working, a state of the art technology and related (test-) facilities as well as flexible residential concepts.
